1. Non-EU Citizenship
You must not be an EU citizen and must not be in Portugal irregularly. This visa is available to citizens of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
2. Clean Criminal Record
You must have no prior criminal record, specifically no sentences to a penalty of deprivation of liberty.
3. Minimum Income Requirements: Active Income
To apply as a Digital Nomad, you need to have an average monthly income of at least four times the Portuguese monthly wage. As of 2024, this amounts to €3,280 per month.
If applying with a spouse, partner or adult child, this amount should increase in €410 per month; if applying with a minor dependent, the amount should increase €246.
4. Proof of Financial Means
You need to prove that you have one year of means of subsistence in a Portuguese bank account, taking into consideration the entire family unit.
5. Family Inclusion
Family members, such as spouses or partners, dependents, or parents, can apply for a residence visa along with the main applicant.

1. How long do I need to stay in Portugal with the Digital Nomad Visa?
With the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa, you can leave the country for 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months within the 2-year validity period.
For instance, you could stay for 3 months in the first year and 5 months in the second year, or complete the 6-month requirement in the first year and none in the second.
If you leave the country longer than allowed, you will only be able to renew with proper justification (for example, professional, medical, or family).
2. Can my family join me on the Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes, your spouse and dependent children can join you on the Digital Nomad Visa. You’ll need to provide proof of sufficient financial means to support your family and additional documentation such as marriage or birth certificates.
3. Will I become a Tax Resident with the Portuguese Digital nomad Visa?
Yes, if you intend to stay in Portugal, you must apply for Portuguese residency and obtain a residence card, which will be valid for 2 years initially. You will become a tax resident.
This means you will need to declare in Portugal your worldwide income. This does not mean that you need to pay additional taxes in Portugal, but you will be liable for Portuguese Taxes. However, Portugal has Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) with many countries to avoid double taxation.
4. Is my worldwide health insurance valid for the Portuguese Digital Nomad Visa?
For your visa application, you will need travel insurance that covers the Schengen area, situations of repatriation, and a minimum amount of €30,000. For your residence permit application, you will need health insurance that covers Portugal.
5. Can I work for Portuguese companies with the Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes, with this kind of residence permit, you will be allowed to work in Portugal for Portuguese companies.
