Italy Family Visa Requirements
Requirements to obtain the Family Visa or the Family Cohesion vary based on the family member who sponsors the Visa.
1. Family members of EU or Italian Citizens (who are residents in Italy)
Eligible family members include:
- Spouse
- Direct descendants under the age of 21 or those who are economically/physically dependent, and those of the spouse
- Direct ascendants who are economically/physically dependent, and those of the spouse.
Requirements:
- The Italian/EU Citizen is registered at the “Anagrafe” (city hall) as a resident;
- The family member must demonstrate the family link with official documents;
If the family member is dependent on the Italian/EU Citizen, income requirements will apply. - For those Family Members, a streamlined procedure will be applied.
For nationals of Visa Waiver countries:
- They can request a Residence Permit at the Questura after three months of stay.
For nationals of non-Visa Waiver countries:
- They must obtain a Visa but the procedure is streamlined and Visa Fee is waived.
2. Family members of non-EU Citizens
Eligible family members include:
- Spouse (at least 18 years old, not legally separated)
- Unmarried minor children, including those of the spouse or born outside of marriage (with consent from the other parent)
- Adopted, fostered, or children under guardianship
- Dependent adult children unable to support themselves due to total disability
- Dependent parents with no other children in their home country or parents over 65 if other children cannot support them due to serious health issues
Requirements:
- A dwelling meeting hygiene, sanitary requirements, and housing suitability, verified by municipal offices.
- An annual minimum income from legal sources:
At least €6,542.51 plus half of this amount (€3,271.25) for each additional family member. - For reunification with two or more children under 14, an annual income of at least double the social allowance (€13,085.02).
- Health insurance or other suitable coverage for dependents over 65, or registration with the National Health Service.
- A “Nulla Osta” from competent authorities confirming the possession of the above requirements (not applicable to Family Cohesion).
Visa Requirements:
- For those Family Members, a Family Visa (through the Italian Consulate) or a Family Cohesion request (directly in Italy) can take place:
- For nationals of Visa Waiver countries, a Residence Permit can be requested at the Questura, provided they have a stamp from the Italian border police in their passport or have declared their presence in Italy within eight days of arrival.
- For nationals of non-Visa Waiver countries, a Family Reunion Visa is necessary. This can be requested after the sponsor is already in Italy with a Residence Permit or (depending on the type of the Visa of the sponsor) after the sponsor has received their Visa. This allows family members to enter Italy together.
