Italy Elective Residence Visa Requirements

The Elective Residency Visa is for individuals who wish to live in Italy long term while proving they have sufficient financial means to support themselves without working. To ensure a successful application, you must meet specific eligibility criteria and provide the necessary documentation.

Here’s what you need to prepare:

You must apply for this Visa through the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over your place of legal residence.

Before applying for the Visa you must have proof of ownership of residential real estate property in Italy or that you already signed and registered a lease for a residential property in Italy.

The main condition for this visa is demonstrating sufficient financial means to support your stay in Italy. Each Consulate may have different requirements, so trusted legal guidance is key.

You must show a passive income of at least €31,000 annually for the main applicant, most of the time supported by six months of bank statements and the previous two years of tax declarations, as well as other legal documents such as proof of income.

While not mandatory by some Consulates, obtaining private healthcare insurance from a provider that services Italy is highly recommended to cover any medical needs during your stay and comply with the majority of the Consulate’s requirements and the law that created this Visa.

The typical documents needed include:

  • Proof of accommodation in Italy.
  • Private healthcare insurance (recommended).
  • Proper documentation showing proof of sufficient funds.
  • A motivation letter explaining your reasons for moving to Italy (required by some Consulates).
  • A valid passport with sufficient residual validity.
